Oates is one of the most renowned contemporary female writers who is famous for her productivity and complicated artistic style. She is an erudite deeply influenced by the literary tradition and at the same time keeps her creativity, which deserves appreciation and respect. Laying emphasis on the successiveness and surpassness to the literary tradition of her early works, this thesis gives an analysis on some of the characteristics in her writing style. She revises the theory of Naturalism partially and attempts to closely connect the Naturalism with the Romanticism. She succeeds to and surpasses O'Connor and Gothic fiction in the description of violence.
