As a group of new narratologies , American narrative theorist James Phelan's rhetorical narrative theory has general traits which post-classical narrative have in common, at the same time. It also has special methodology and perspective, which is different from other theory groups. It doubtless is an edificatory philosophy, and embodies a spiritual direction and theory quality of post-philosophical culture: insists on the views of anti-basic theory; emphasizes exchange and dialogue; emphasizes pragmatism and illumination. The rhetorical narrative theory combines the precise survey of narrative-mode and the focus on the narrative receiving-context, especially on the reading ethic and ideology, the aesthetic studying of internal text and the social history environment, which is out of the text. It notices reciprocal and communal function of writer, text and reader in the movable course of narrating. The concept of rhetoric has a complex evolutional course with people's knowledge about language thought belief and world changed. With multiform perspective, movable insight and wide-field eyesight. Jane's Phelan's rhetorical narrative theory becomes an important part of the post-classical narrative theories. As though china lacks the tradition of destructuralism,as one of many languages, the Chinese exists objectively the rhetoric of language and relation to the ideology which the destructuralism discovers .the struggles among ideologies which hide in the Chinese text never stops. Phelan's theory has some value to refer to and assimilate for Chinese narrative theory and criticism practice.
