When we enjoy an oil painting especially of a master's, we will definitely be touched and surprised by the charm of the painting. A painter according to the object and theme of a painting applies various methods to compose the surface state of a picture that is called the surface structure of a tableau. It is important for an artist to know how to appropriately deal with the surface structure of a tableau in order to make it in accordance with contents, thought, emotions, modeling and color of a painting and thus reflect the aesthetic value of the surface structure of a tableau. The equally important for an artist is to find out one's best artistic language to express one's own ideas. Therefore, the paper is intended to probe into the surface structure of a painting from the following aspects: first, the idea, typology and ways of reflection of surface structure; next, the development of surface structure in the West and China; then, the law of appliance of studies on surface structure; last, exploration of aesthetic value of surface structure. As regard to the surface structure of a painting, there is no definite and authoritative account no matter from western or eastern perspective. Also, literature relevant to surface structure is in disorder and fails to be specific, which makes the short-term studies on surface structure more complex. The paper aims to solve the problem. Therefore, the paper has a quite new perspective to study. It may help an artist find out his own language of drawing and a way to communicate with the world.
