Second language acquisition is a theory which studies how other languages beside one's mother tongue are acquired. It is very useful in raising language teaching efficiency, and has profound practical and theoretical value.This paper deals with some major elements in the process of second language acquisition. It highlights the language input theory and tries to test that the language input for language learners is composed of both the language input from the environment and the language output of the language learners themselves. Thus foreign language teaching should adopt an interactive approach, and should make full use of two-way communication within the classroom in order to achieve the best learning effect.Based on second language acquisition theories, the paper further discusses foreign language teaching method. It makes a detailed comparison between various teaching methods and probes their advantages and disadvantages respectively. Finally the author gives out her own opinion on an appropriate teaching method feasible to Chinese college education.
