In China's college English teaching, the differences between English and Chinese thinking patterns are believed to be one of the fundamental reasons for errors or mistakes committed by students. Since language and culture coexist in an inextricable relationship, thinking pattern, as an essential part of culture, is naturally embodied by its corresponding language. Therefore, a contrastive analysis is conducted between English and Chinese in the aspects of word formation, sentence structure and discourse organization to make out the differences between English and Chinese thinking patterns. The analysis reveals that native English speakers tend to think analytically while native Chinese prefer to think synthetically. And it is held in this thesis that the striking difference is traceable to the different natural surroundings, social values and traditional philosophies between ancient westerners and Chinese.
