Respect refers to one's outer appearance of modesty, courtesy, solemnity and caution. Emotion means one's inherent mentality ofhappiness and anger, likes and dislikes. As the form and the content makeup each other, sometimes are deviate and sometimes consistent. The thesisaims at the politeness phenomena that respect violates emotions, particularly to make clue of the important part of Xunzi's Li theory—"thesame respect but different emotions" as a typical case, to bring to light thehistorical inevitability and actual reasonableness of the awareness—practice mode and the train of thought that are characterized by theory"the same respect but different emotions", so as to guide our practice andbenefit the society. To sum up the whole thesis, it can be divided into fourparts: Part One is to summarize the origin and content of Xunzi's Li theory, basing on the overall grasp and erection on theory above, to expounddeeply on the opinion of politeness of Xunzi. Part Two is to illustrate the relationship between respect and emotion,to divide his viewpoint on politeness into two parts: "the accordance ofrespect and emotion", "the same respect but different emotions". Theformer belongs to one's regular and accustomed mode on awareness andpractice, while the latter equals to an expedient measure when one isfacing the choices of gains and losses. Meanwhile the advance of thetheory was under the deep era background of tremendous changes withobjective historical certainty. Although it was criticized and scolded asXiangyuan during long years of history, yet it was and has been the truestate of affairs of social intercourses in the past as well as at present. iiiPart Three demonstrates that theory of "the same respect but differentemotions" was thought highly of in Yuanlu times in Japan. At that time thecommon customs and public feelings of advocating magnificence andchasing profits and lusts were continued and developed by Culai School, then it forms distinctive and admirable politeness phenomena. Thus, therevival and development of the theory have deep significances ofrectification and therapy to overcome the long-existing weakness in China. Conclusion is to restate the essence of principle "the same respect butdifferent emotions", and to summarize its positive and constructivesignificances in the fields of thoughts, education, politics and so on.
