Bi Shumin is one of the most powerful female writers who have the most unusual character in Chinese present age literature. She has created very influential works of nearly 4,000,000 words and has gained more than 30 prizes both at home and abroad since the late 1980's. She altered her career halfway. When she created her first piece of works in 1987, she was already 35 years old. She joined the army when she was 16 and had a 22 years' experience of practicing medicine. She is another writer, after Lu Xun and Guo Moruo, who gave up medical science for writing.Bi Shumin's uncommon life experience gives her works very distinctive characteristic and endows her double perspectives both as a writer and as a doctor. She also possess the unique insight that can grasp clearly both mental and physical essence, the courage, broad mind and merciful sentiments that are difficult for many writers, especially female writers to have, and the sense of mission and responsibility that regard it as her own duty to heal the wounded and rescue the dead, and cure the sickness to save the patient.Bi Shumin pay close attention to her writing objects from the perspectives both as a writer and as a doctor. She grasps clearly the essence of life from all aspects, such as physiology, psychology, ethnics and morals; she focuses on medical theme and develops a school of her own because of her medical contents and narrative performance. She calmly interpret the theme of "life" and "death" and the great humanistic care in a calm and unhurried tone, and span the single sociological perspective and rises to the level to question closely on the value of life and to think about the meaning of life by her ever more mature works. She expresses her literary gist to reveal, criticizes and remoulds the shortcomings of human nature by literarily exploring the functional relationship between doctors and patients, and that of disease and therapy, which are the most basic ones in the complicated medical system. She clothes medical science with literary coat and mould the characters' nature with the "coldness" of medical scienceand the "hotness" of literature. She makes the gloomy medical topics and abstruse and obscure medical terms relaxing, humorous and good-looking in the literary style.Bi Shumin, who travels in the fields of medicine and literature, is a unique scene in Chinese literary world.
