William Shakespeare is a great thinker. The greatest thought of his is about the meanings of man who has to dead. Everyone of us can't avoid this question. In his tragedies, Shakespeare's question about life is painful and willful. What is he quest for? In his Romances(Tragicomedies),he is modest and tolerant. The change from his tragedies to his Romances is great and sudden. What is the reason for this change? This thesis tries to answer these questions according to the theory of existence. The thesis includes three chapters. The first chapter analyses the hopeless suicide of Brutus in his tragedy Julius Caesar, Hamlet's question of existence in Hamlet and the broken world in King Lear .The conclusion is, if man indulges himself in the trust of his reason, he will gain indefinite despair and pain, whether he looks for the meanings of life from the life itself or quests for them in front of the void. This world can neither assure the meanings of life which are made by man himself, nor can answer the question of man.The second chapter analyses Shakespeare's Romances which belong to his latter works. In these Romances, some kind of holy power diminishes the pain and despair of man. It is because man turns round thoroughly and prays sincerely after the painful question. This holy power is not some judge that is outside the man himself. It needs the true understand of man. And a man who understands this power is the man who is delivered. He frees himself from his limitations(Death) and gains the ultimate freedom. So his Romances show some quiet, satisfactory and happy scenes. The third chapter analyses the reasons which cause the change from Tragedies to Romances. Shakespeare himself turned round. He understands that man has no meaning. A man who wants to be delivered must understand this meaningless situation and have the courage to recognize it. So he will eagerly want to be delivered .At the same time, he know that he himself has no qualification to be delivered. So he can give up hisconceit and be modest. At this time, he can truly understand the holy love from the God according to the Cross event. A man who recognizes this love is a delivered man. He will surpass his limited life and gain the true freedom. This freedom is not the unaided rush in void; it is the freedom by the leading of God. It brings the ultimate quiet, satisfaction and happiness. The change from Tragedies to Romances is the key point about the question of how to be a true man. The process from Hamlet's hopeless death to Prospero's new born is the process of the born of a true man. Shakespeare himself experienced this process and gained the true freedom of man.
