J·K·Rowling is a British female writer who gained her fame at the end of the 20thcentury. From Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stones, which is the first book of theHarry Potter series, her works got popular in not only the United Kingdom but alsomany other countries in the world in no time. Both children and adults are enchantedby the magic stories.What made this series which looks like children's adventures shake the whole worldbeyond the limit of age and nation? There must be some profound significance behindit, with relations to the British literature tradition and the aesthetic value it fosters.From the angle of "British Gothic novel tradition", based on the examples of classicGothic novels such as The Mysteries of Udolpho, The Italian, The Monk, this articleaims to summarize the essential elements of Gothic novels in the aspects of scene,plot, theme and character, so to establish a new view and interpretation of the"children's novel"Harry Potter. It also analyses the novel's role in inheriting andinnovating Gothic novels'traditions and values, and the cultural significance of itsoverwhelming popularity at the beginning of the new millennium.
