In the study of Chinese middle ancient history, Prof Chen Yin-ke gave his more attention to the problems of race and culture and he thought that cultural problem is more important than racial one. Of racial and cultural problems, the latter is measure of the nation. Prof Chen's opinions about these problems had a far-reaching effect on history study, so they are still being widely discussed today. There are still some ambiguous opinions on Chen's conception. So it is very necessary to reexamine and analyze Chen's conception. This thesis, through analyzing systematically and perusing Chen's historical monograph and so on, tries to discriminate between these words: race and nation. The study showed that the words of race and nation in Chen's literature have its particular meanings. Race is inherent while nation is changeable, that is to say, with the inheriting and spreading of culture, the nation will continue enlarge accordingly. The conception of Prof Chen's in race and culture will be backdated to ancient age in China, but, more important, Prof Chen mended this traditional opinion. So his conception is more rational. This thesis analyzes Chen's study in the history of Sui and Tang dynasties with his conception's guidance. The application of his conception was illustrated with three important theories. This thesis discourses the reason why Chen's opinion had an enormous impact. Because of great learning wisdom, the conception of Prof Chen's in race and culture impenetrate Chen's history study all the time, so Prof Chen had unique and systemic comprehension of Chinese mediaeval history.
