With the rising of Economic and Social History, history study begin to pay more attention to the common people.This dissertation focuses on the European Middle Ages universities about the risings and the characteristics. At the same time , it reveals the scholar life in Middle Ages. The scholar here refers to the teachers and students in the universities who are devoted to study.This dissertation is mainly about the 12th, and 13th centuries of Europe, investigating some main characteristics of the early universities of Europe. On the other hand, through putting the universities in the whole background, we can analyze some changes of Western civilization.And through the study.it reveals the process of Western civilization from a new angle. The paper develops from the following aspectsrthe rising of the universities;the community structure of the universities and the relationship of the universities with the whole society. The paper centers on the community structure of the universities, and shows that the universities are places of studying the general knowledge. The dissertation is mainly divided into five parts.In the abstract, it points out the importance of the study, and sums up the studies of Western and Chinese scholars on the subject. And it also points out the study angle of the paper.In the first chapter,it discusses the rising of the universities in western Europe in Middle Ages.It seeks the traditional roots of the univerdities, including the traits of Greek, Rome, Frank and the Christianity. It also narrates the social background of the society and the rising of the universities.In the second chapter , it analyzes the community structure of the universities and the characteristics.
