Dubliners is among the earliest works of James Joyce. Critics have been directing more attention to their exploitations of its realist and naturalist characteristics. Now some Joycean researchers start blazing their trails into the modernist nature of the work. However, the researches they made are either focused on one of the fifteen stories or attempted to explore the problem from one aspect only. This thesis examines both the content and the form of the collection, giving its subject matter and its themes a close investigation, and making a relatively thorough analysis of those modernist techniques used in it, namely, the employment of epiphany, the detached narration, the extensive use of symbols, and so on. Finally it comes to the naturally conclusion that Dubliners contains an unnegligible modernist core.
