Ludwig van Beethoven (1770—1827), one of the greatest musicians in western music history, occupied a place of importance in the world music history. He contributed a lot in many field of music, especially in the field of sonata form, a very important musical form in western music. His reform and innovation in this particular musical form were mainly reflected in his 32 pieces of piano sonata divertimenti. In Beethoven's hands, it turned to a huge musical form that expresses the spirit of the age with its large-scale structure. Therefore, this special from of music was applied onto various kinds of music creation. Beethoven's new ideas on this musical form accelerated the development of instrumental musical forms as well as the development of European musical culture.The present thesis is divided into three parts. Firstly, it gives an overall introduction to the important musical form. Secondly, it analyzes step by step the unique features of this musical form in different historical periods, and reveals its development details from a very simple form to a complicated one through the innovative works of many different musical composers. Finally, the writer highlights her research onto Beethoven's 32 pieces of piano sonata divertimenti, which mainly focuses on the structure, the techniques of composition, its ideological implication, etc. The writer tentatively concludes Beethoven's breakthrough and historical contributions in the composing field, and gives her own opinion on the far-reaching influence of his reform to the techniques and concepts of composition of his followers.The writer believes that analysis and research of this topic will help us study well the basic composition theories, and grasp the main ideas in development history of music.
