In recent years, scary movies are becoming more and more popular and countries and regions besides the original place of production—Hollywood and Japan begin to produce this kind of films and have gained considerable success, such as Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand and India. In account of the various places of production, the different national culture and social customs, scary movies have come to break through the fixed patterns imposed on it by Hollywood and Japan and have stepped onto the stage of world movies with colorful national features. This thesis puts its stress mainly on the scary films produced in Japan, the United States and Korea, for the scary movies from these three countries are not only considerable in quantity but also unique in quality and style respectively, standing for typical trends in the development of scary movies. This thesis will be divided into two parts besides introduction and conclusion. The main body of this thesis will be divided into two parts. The first part will be a comparison between Japanese, American and Korean scary movies. First, the author will give a definition of scary films and point out that the film texts discussed in this thesis belongs to scary films in a broad sense. Secondly, this thesis gives a brief survey of the history of scary movies in the three countries. Thirdly, there will be a comparison and contrast between the scary movies of the three countries in three aspects which are the themes, the "characters" and the narration. The second part will be an analysis of the features of Korean scary movies, discussing briefly the three main unique features of them. First, the Korean scary films are good at learning from Japanese and American ones and making full use of what they have learnt. Secondly, on the basisof learning from others, Korean scary movies are abundant in artistic creation which is based on its own national features and movie culture. Thirdly, the Korean scary movies feature a strong pursuit of ethics. (This part has been discussed in a paper published in The Contemporary Movies, the 5th of 2004.)At present, the study of foreign scary movies is still marginal in the movie study at home with few articles analyzing, understanding and interpreting scary films from the artistic angle despite the fact that there are quite a few articles studying scary movies from the angle of sociology, psychology or Reception Theory. What' s more, the scholars studying scary movies at home are scarcely specialized. There are many gaps to be filled in the study of scary movies such as the insufficient supply of systematic theoretical works and the small number of the articles about scary film study on academic movie journals, while unacademic movie magazines are publishing articles nothing more than introductions, reviews. This thesis employs mainly comparison and contrast to survey and sum up with an attempted analysis the characteristics and their unique patterns of scary films in specific regions so as to acquire an overall understanding of scary movies in hopes of being some complement to the present study. However, due to my limited studying ability and scope of knowledge together with manual material-arranging work, the material is barely sufficient and possibly inaccurate, but on the whole, the material is dependable. Additionally, the thesis focuses on analysis, induction and summary, so there is scant theoretical creation and still much room for improvement in the writing. I' d very much appreciate criticism from my readers.
