The thesis, based upon the fundamental principles of Marxism that Man's social being determines his consciousness and that the economic base determines the superstructure, attempts to describe and analyze the serious challenge to the people's morals and the principle of traditional collectivism, which the economic system transformation from the planned economy to the market economy has been bringing about. In order to meet this challenge and to make our superstructure fit our changed economic base, the thesis begins with stating Marx's and Engle's thought on the relationship of individuals and society, and based upon the analysis of the reasons why we cannot practice individualism and the problems the traditional collectivism faces in practice, the thesis proposes a new expression of the content of our socialist collectivism for our new historical stages:(1) Socialist collectivism should be taking the free and full development of every person in a society as its starting point and its ultimate end; the interests of the whole should be consistent with such a free and full development of every individual.(2) The basic task of socialist collectivism is to promote and ensure with great effort the harmony of the society. Thus, our society or community ought to create an equal opportunity for every free individual (including the concern for the weak group and limit to the gap between the rich and the poor) .(3) In order to ensure the individuals' full and free development and social harmony, it must be required that: first, an individual obey the principle of no harm to others while pursuing the right of self-development; second, the moral code of conduct which represents the entire social interests be established on the basis of □ inter-subjective (inter-individual) rational consensus.
