World-renowned Canadian poetess and novelist, Margaret Atwood, published her latest novel, Oryx and Crake, in April 2003. The objectives of this M.A. thesis are to disclose the constructive interaction between thematic concerns and narrative features of the novel, and the artistic impact on readers from the perspectives of eco-criticism and contemporary narratology theories. The originality of this thesis lies in its in-depth study of Atwood's Oryx and Crake in the hope of providing a comprehensive analysis of both ecological themes and flexible narrative strategy to break away from the limitations of conventional thematic studies and close reading of the New Criticism. In this thesis, I attempt to combine thematic study and narratology study to discuss Atwood's representation of the future scenario of the world, together with diseases and abuse of cloning technology, and humanistic and political crises against this background. On the other hand, the use of focalization, free indirect discourse and intertextuality is located in the novel to analyze Atwood's narrative flexibility and its organic association with the ecological concern to generate the feelings of awe and enlightenment on the part of the readers.
