TBLT (task-based language teaching) is a type of language teaching approachwhich takes "tasks" as its key units for the designing and implementation of secondlanguage instruction. This "task" is not a language problem, but one which demandslearners to solve by using the target language in communication. TBLT approachsuggests that effective language learning is experiential rather than instructional.Therefore, it emphasizes "learning by doing", leaves learners to experience the targetlanguage and construct the language system by themselves. What's more, the demandfor the tasks to be similar to those in daily life ensures that the tasks possess the featuresof real communication. All this is supposed to be helpful in training learners'communicative competence.TBLT approach is a new model developed within the framework ofcommunicative language teaching. In the new National English Curriculum Standards(2001),TBLT is the recommended foreign language teaching approach to be introducedto primary and secondary English education in China. Having almost the same goal,English teaching in higher vocational colleges can use the TBLT approach effectly.The thesis is composed of four chapters.Chapter One traces back to the original form of TBLT approach, defines theconcept of task and what task-based language teaching approach is, generalizes thefundamental principles followed by TBLT approach, analyzes the theoretical foundationof TBLT approach.Chapter Two analyzes the practical TBLT approach in higher vocationalcollege ,which is the main section of this thesis. First, it states the possibilities andnecessities of the practical TBLT approach in higher vocational college by analyzing thepresent condition of English teaching in higher vocational college. Based on this pointof view, the chapter concludes with a detailed study on how to integrate the essence ofTBLT into the present English language classroom in higher vocational college.Secondly, it defines the meaning of the practical TBLT approach in higher vocationalcollege, analyzes the teaching model, describes the procedures for TBLT to be carriedout in the classroom, provides a workable framework for its implementation. And, itgives a real teaching case to show how the practical TBLT approach is carried out in theclassroom in higher vocational college.Chapter Three deals with three aspects of TBLT approach: task, students andteachers, which are the key aspects in practical TBLT in higher vocational education.These three aspects connect with one another in English teaching, which the students arethe executors, the teacher is the instructor. Both of the teacher and the students can benefitfrom the teaching tasks.Chapter Four analyzes the advantages and restrictions of the practical TBLTapproach in higher vocational college, and forecasts the trends of practical TBLTapproach in higher vocational college.
