| As one of the best representatives of the romantic novels in the 19th century, Moby-Dick is undoubtedly a very charming work for readers. However, as soon as it was published, it was vehemently criticized by those contemporary readers and critics for its utilization of many original writing skills that greatly deviated from those contemporary rules of novel writing. Therefore, this novel has naturally become a total failure both in artistic achievements and in commercial values. Fortunately, as time goes on, the artistic achievements of Moby-Dick have gradually won the readers' and scholars' acknowledgements. Nowadays, Moby-Dick has not only acquired all deserving praises and acknowledgements but also become a very important object of the academic study. However, though its subject, content, writing materials, the implied meaning of characters, etc. are all deeply and carefully explored by many scholars, it is quite rare for us to study all original writing skills used in Moby-Dick. So this thesis aims to reveal the specialities of the craftsmanship in Moby-Dick through the careful exploration of those original writing skills used in the character depiction, the plot weaving and the circumstance molding of this novel. |
