Suzhou Pingtan, a combined term for Pinghua and Tanci is a flower in the art circles of Southern Yangtse River. It's singing and narrating in the soft mellow Suzhou dialect. Tanci is performed in both forms of narration and singing to the accompaniment of 3-stringed plucked instrument named Sanxian and Pipa. Taking shape from the turn of the Ming and Qing dynasties, this local art form has enjoyed a history of over three hundred years. Rich in genres and popular with people, Suzhou Pingtan has produced a variety of schools of arias and master performers, growing in process into a well-acclaimed stage art. However, in the severely changing environment, brilliant past doesn't mean prosperous future.Based on the analysis of the popular culture Pingtan is, this text compares it with other related arts. In order to find the characteristic of Pingtan, it also has deeply expatiated the cultural attribute, which contains text, actor, audience and performance place. By means of paying close attention to the present social environment and aesthetic taste of audience nowadays, this paper is aiming at finding the root causes of a good many problems in performance, inheriting and spreading. At the end, to propose reform conjecture and preliminary idea.
