Neo-historical novel is a unique literary phenomenon in the literary world of the new epoch. Its appearance was in a context that the nostalgic, neo-realistic and avant-garde novels were confronted with setbacks in the process of their seeking new spiritual sources and value props; thus they turned to re-estimate history in an attempt to resolve the crisis existing in the reality by entering history. It is a new novelistic branch born at the time when the growing potential of the nostalgic novels, neo-realistic novels and avant-garde novels crocked up. The development of neo-historical novels can be divided into three stages: birth and naming of neo-historical novels; the exploration and perfection of its form; recording the present history. Most of the writers in the first stage (1985-1992) evolved from the traditional writing of realistic, avant-garde and neo-realistic novels and were influenced by the tides of the discourse of western neo-historicism and the renewal of literary history etc. These writers stuck to the humanity ideals and hoped to reconstruct the lost humanity spirit. They managed to display the world under the shelter of power discourse and to structure their own aesthetic space with heterogeneous languages and meanwhile expressed their new historical notions. They incorporated the formal experiment of the avant-garde novels and the populace point of view with new historical notions. The majority of the writers in the second stage (1993-2000) were good at making fictitious and even absurd plots. They compressed the diachronic historical space into a synchronic performing stage and designated the evolution of the relationship of some particular groups as the hallmark of the change of social configuration in order to delineate the history in the arena of culture, humanity and living. They subverted and deconstructed the orthodox historical notions with anecdotes and historical notion of folks. Thus the writers realized their narrative tactics in the name of"history"and accomplished their artistic activity. In the third stage (2001—), the neo-historical novels entered a level of"existentialistic history"and"anthropological history". The horizon of the writers gradually penetrated into the temporary especially the present history since 90s. On one hand, they paid attention to the material satisfactions brought about by the market economy; on the other hand, they displayed humans'spiritual alienation.
