The "common" can be defined as "informal" or "straight", besides, it has a broader and profounder social and cultural meaning. Special background and environment shaped the writers' perspective of value and their taste of life in Yuan Dynasty. The content of literature works in Yuan Dynasty was famous for writing the life of common people, and advocating the thought of common people.This paper systematically states the basic characteristics of Xiaoling, originating from classical poetry and having its own literary style. Xiaoling is a kind of common literature. Its basic characteristic is "common" which is not only shown in its content of thought and artistic characteristics but also in the writers and the circulating environment of Xiaoling. Both in the Xiaoling about signing the life and about living in seclusion, the pround descriptions of the common life obviously embodied people's interest in "common". The artistic characteristics of Xiaoling's "common" are mainly shown in types of literature, language and imago. Meanwhile, the beauty and deficiency exist in the "common" of Xiaoling. The beauty refers to artistic conception, truthfulness, sentiment and tune. The deficiency refers to some lavatorial and nasty things.Xiaoling had the primary characteristics of literature of Yuan Dynasty. By contrast with Taoshu or Sanqu, Xiaoling had an more elegant style. However, because it was "common", the Taoshu made up of couples of Xiaoling should be more common. As the number of Xiaoling increased, the writer had more space to express himself. It was the case in fact. Similarly, because Taoshu was common, Juqu made up of couples of Taoshu was also common.
