Through the study of the course of introduction, development and narrowing of the "arts and crafts" conception, this research aims to reveal the basic clew and developing regulation of the transformation of Chinese art & design from traditional form to modern modality. The origin of the word "arts and crafts" could be dated from the "Art& Craft movement" emerged in England during 1960 to 1980. At the beginning of 20th century, this artistic conception was introduced into China through Japan, and soon turns to be popular. The evolvement of this conception mirrors the influence which exerted on the development of the basic conception "design" by the special political and economic environment during the process of the improvement from the traditional handicraft pattern to the modern mechanical producing pattern. Currently, some domestic theorists have refreshed the consecution of the development of this conception, but none of them has probed into the background reason of the transformation. And here I think it was the political, economic and social factor that have deeply changed the original meaning of the conception "art & craft". And during the process of the distortion, narrowing and being instead by the conception "art & design", the emotionalized factors that enveloped in the conception "art & craft" have been denied together. These factors include abundant culture deposition for thousands of years, so it certainly has its rationality of being. We should rethink the total denial that bring together with the process of the conception transformation. In the face of the globalization of design at the present time, in order to have a(?)ght future, firstly we must have an in-depth study to the whole native designhistory. This is why we should pay equal attention to the questions above about ourattitude to tradition "art & craft" and what it means to the future development of the"art & design".
