George Eliot focuses much on the moral consciousness of her works. In Middlemarch, She reveals the negative impact of moral egoism on morality by relating the behavior and consequence of the moral egoists. Though the behavior of the moral egoists violates the regular moral standard, George Eliot calls on us in her novel to judge them sympathetically so that we can treat the evil men, namely the moral egoists in a merciful and tolerate way so as to save their souls by love. Therefore, in my opinion, self-abandonment and sympathy are just what George Eliot strongly advocates in Middlemarch. |
