The development of China's music has entered into a new phase when it is the beginning of the 21st century. Numerous world-famous musicians have been working enthusiastically on the stage of world music, which is meanwhile the direct outcome of China's musical educational development. When being satisfied, we should think more about the history, as well as the previous development of China's music, from which we could learn both achievements and experiences, in order to acquire better development in the future.In terms of western brasses, though it has been introduced into China for over a hundred years, it is only since 1930s, after the founding of new China that it has become known all over the country. Compared with other western instruments, western brasses starts relatively late in China. However, we should realize at the same time that western brasses develops very fast in a short period of time; objectively speaking, this is closely related to the prosperous and stable social environment, while subjectively, this is inseparable with the great efforts of the pioneers in brasses they have cultivated a new world for the development of the brasses in China. Among those pioneers, there is one personage who is acknowledged as the innovator of China's first generation of brasses art --- Xia Zhiqiu.Taking the factors above as a basis, the author has astonishingly found through the life experience of Professor Xia that as a versatile musician, he has contributed greatly to China's musical development. The thesis consists of three parts: 1. The educational and life experience of Xia Zhiqiu, which has an impressive influence on the personality and future development of Xia. 2. Five identities of Xia Zhiqiu. The thesis will make a comprehensive analysis of his achievements and contributions in social musical activities, composing, conducting, education and brasses during his adulthood. 3. Xia Zhiqiu's contributions to China's brasses. The thesis will mainly focus on the third part and make a detailed discussion in light of his contributions and achievements in brasses.The author will both describe and analyze in the writing, meanwhile, pay attention to the analysis of some historical documents and viewpoints. At the same time, when introducing his contributions to brass winds, the author will relate this to his life achievements to obtain a thorough mastery. Finally, the author will give the readers a complete and profound knowledge of this famous composer, musical educationist, the founder of China's choir arts, the pioneer of China's conducting cause, and the beginner of China's brasses, and call the readers to learn his excellent personality and to research into his pursuit of music, to make more impressive contribution to China's music development.
