With the improvement of science and technology and rapid development of market-oriented economy, our society is increasingly stepping forward into an era of consumer cultural. The consumer culture with the characteristics of anti-authority, deconstruction of sublime and logos, worshipping the diversities has challenged and impinged strongly the literary classics which are often considered carrying the common aesthetic value and moral value. The authority, super-time and space, eternality and stability of literary classics are being challenged by the consumerism. At present, it is of importance to discuss the question about literary classics.First of all, the paper begins from the original interpretation of Chinese and Western"classic"and"literary classic", outlines and summarizes the four main characteristics of literary classics: rich content; originality; special aesthetic experience and the unity of national and global nature. About the process of formation of literary classics, the paper has analyzed specifically the actors and ways of formation of literary classics. In this process, the national ideology is powerful in choosing the literary classics, the elite scholar's critics and expounding are the important impetus, and also the public's reading is the important condition, three of which are interacted together in the process of formation of literary classics. The third section of this paper has mainly analyzed the decline of literary classics under the contemporary context, not only showing the signs of decline of literary classics, but also expounding the reasons: the image culture transcending the language of literary classics; the consciousness of literary classics having declined; the deconstruction of consumerism culture against the literary classics; the changes of production and spread ways of the literary classics and the failing of the capacity of the recognizing institution about literary classics. The decline of literary classics is certainly true think what we should do is not to acclaim the decline of literary classics, but to defend the literary classics and safeguard the habitat of our soul and to find to the significant evidence for the existence of the literary classics at present context. So the excellent art spirit and the moral value of literary classics are still brilliant on the contemporary stage.
