Katherine Anne Porter is one of the famous southern women writers in American literature. Her fiction deeply reveals the mental crisis of the western modern society. This thesis probes into the predicament of communication in Porter's fiction, which can be divided into three aspects: between the individual and others, between the individual and self and between the individual and tradition. The communicative predicament between the individual and others occurs in two fields: the communicative predicament in adults'world and the communicative predicament between adults and children. The communicative predicament between the individual and self can be divided into two aspects: the individuals'escape from reality and the individuals'compromise with reality. The communication between the individual and tradition is the extension of the communication between the individual and self. The communicative predicament between the individual and tradition can be revealed in two aspects: the distance between personal experience and traditonal religion and the individuals'refusal of tradition. The communicative predicament reflects both the futility of the relationship between the individual and others and the failure of relationship between the individual and self. Love and self-consciousness are the best ways to get rid of the communicative predicament. The last chapter is to briefly analyse how to understand love and self combined with Porter's fiction.
