In one of his article in 1939, Mao Dun indicated the writing theme of Midnight was to explain one question——China was not marching on the way of capitalism, but came to be more semi-colonized under the oppression of the imperialism. Succeeding the postscript issued by Kai Ming publishing house, this was Mao Dun's another important explanation on the writing theme of Midnight, which also provided weighty basis for successors to illustrate the theme of Midnight. From its rich contents, the subjective goal served only as a beginning but not an ending. Mao Dun anatomized the reality deeply with the scientific theories society and examined Shanghai and its suburbs in 1930s from various aspects such as living styles, production ways, modes on responses to feelings and so on . The unique way of space structure became Mao Dun's characteristic of imagining modern China through literature. What's more, this impulse and the practice of imaging history through literature had a far-reaching influence on Chinese modern literature and especially on the writing of lengthy novels. It's helpful for summarizing Mao Dun's spectacular way of imaging history through the literature by re-reading Midnight and re-analyzing the theme of it.
