John Milton is a famous man in English Renaissance and Revolution, and the idea of liberty is the central content of his thoughts. The thesis discusses the idea and its significance.Milton's idea of liberty is influenced by the Renaissance and Reformation, but its maturity is in the revolution. For the love of freedom, Milton actively dedicates himself to the revolutionary struggle. He argued in order to get personal happiness, people must have three types of freedom, namely freedom of religion, freedom of family life or personal and freedom of civil. Milton' s Freedom of view is quite radical at the time, and the personal free will is the core part of his ideas. He thought the liberty is the natural right, therefore could not be subjected to the authority. However, Milton realized that freedom is restrained by reason, the real freedom is something about pious, self-restraint, and so just the freedom of the virtue. Thus, the individual who want be free must have the virtue.
