This dissertation takes as its subject the reporting problem from the view of speech acts theory . The author makes an analysis of the inbeing of reporting speech act, the produce mechanism of both reporting speech and reported speech, the pragmatic functions of both direct quotation and indirect quotation, the using strategies as well. All of them constitute a systematization . In accordance with the experience of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the author offers several suggestions about quotation including teaching content, practice and the instructor's reporting skills.The paper studies the reported speech from the view of speech acts theory.The reporting speech act is at least related to two diffenent speech acts. One speech act can interpret the other. also, the speech verb sentences and the speech acts have mapping relationship. The main clause and the subordinate clause in the speech verb sentences are equal to the couse part and the speech part of the speech acts . This paper discusses the produce mechanism, the characteristics and the functions of both reporting speech and reported speech through the analysis of the main clause and the subordinate clause in the reporting sentences. This part ends with the comparison of the different functions of direct speech act and indirect speech act.Then, the paper shows the difference between the two kinds of reporting speech acts. It brings forward their using strategies. For the direct reporting speech act, it mainly demonstrates the strategies of using personal pronoun, in the meantime, the strategies of reporting original speech acts in both written and spoken modes are analysed with examples. In the research of indirect reporting speech acts, we firstly discussed about quotation strategies conform to the transformation rules strictly. And then those which are adjusted more or less in practice.The dissertation lists suggestions on reporting teaching content, drill design and the instructor's reporting skills on the basis of the theory. The teacher should inculcate the students with the declarative knowledge and help the foreign students to master the procedural knowledge about reporting acts with all kinds of efficient practice. Which is more importantly, the teacher may use the practice of qoatation to improve the student's language skill and should pay attention to the using of reporting skills himself to make sure that what he says in class is comprehensible input.The paper ends with a summarization, also points out the shortcomings and the correct direction in which the future research should be conducted.
