The purpose of the research was to confirm the structure of epistemological beliefs about learning and investigate the relationship among middle school students' epistemological beliefs about learning, approach to learning and academic performance. That is to say, the research aimed to find out approach to leaning could mediate the relationship between epistemological beliefs about learning and achievement. Interview method was applied in compiling and revising questionnaire, and questionnaire method was applied in collecting data. Then using SPSS11.5 and Lisrel8.70 to analyze the data, the findings indicated that:1. The self-compiled questionnaire is Middle school students' epistemological beliefs questionnaire. It includes beliefs about learning ability, knowledge origin, beliefs about learning process and the nature of knowledge. The reliability and validity of four sub-questionnaires are good. The questionnaire can be used for measuring middle school students' epistemological beliefs about learning.2. The middle school students' beliefs about learning is overly constructive and the attitude to learning is positive.3. Second, sex difference among epistemological beliefs about learning is found; Grade and school type difference among epistemological beliefs about learning are found, and the interaction of grade and school is found on beliefs about knowledge nature.4. Set up the mediator effect model of epistemological beliefs about learning, approach to learning and academic performance, the results show: beliefs about knowledge nature and origin can predict academic performance directly. At the same time, beliefs about knowledge origin can predict achievement through approach to learning as mediator effect indirectly. In addition, beliefs about learning ability and learning process can predict academic performance both directly and indirectly.
