Pelleas and Melisande is an opera of new style that took Debussy 10 years to complete.Under the influence of symbolically literature and Impressionist painting, Debussy chose symbolism Dramatists Maeterlinck's drama works as libretto, clearly symbolizing the typical characteristic of literature in this opera.In this play, the traditional approach of composition gives way to his creativity; the use of large number of creative techniques made this opera music one of the unprecedented works of history. On music aspect, symbolic significance of motifs; on formal structure aspect, the colorization trend of harmonies, the blurry formal structure, the unique application of recitatives, the of the restraint use symphonic orchestra; on literature aspect, the perfect embodiment of the symbolic, tragic, obscure and naturalistic; render this opera unique both in the creation of music or literal plot. The loose and obscure structure of this opera comes from the structure of libretto. The orderly arrangements of plot in the libretto, together with the obscurely formed music and sound contribute to the"vibrato"of the musical form. Literary plot dominates the opera, while music fits in to the literary atmosphere so that the function of music and literature achieves organic unity.The opera reflects the composer's aesthetics different from any previous concepts, and became a representative of impression operas. The techniques and aesthetic concept reflected have created a far-reaching effect for the 20th century opera.
