The Vernacular Painting to some extent attempts to express a kind of cultural tendency in a territory or in a nation. Human relies on their vernacular land and the distinct vernacular inclinations result in distinct cultural implications and intelligent quality, which are embodied in language, literature and art. For the expression of literature and art is referential, it determines the subject matters of art-making, based on the cultural framework and vernacular complex for a territory or a nation. If the form of painting shows an external visional beauty, the cultural quality and humanistic inclination hidden deep in the language of painting are the essence and core of painting as art.In the long process of development, human comes to formulate the different consciousness of vernacular complexes. From primitive cave painting, we can find the life traces of our forefathers and the worship to nature. With the progress of human civilization, the subject matter consciousness of painting is embodied in the historic, territorial and narrative episodes, and the charm of primitive art lies in the forefathers' love and piety to life and land, in the expression toward nature. This paper works out the lines and sources of the Vernacular Painting and its aesthetic inclination by focusing on the literary complex in the vernacular consciousness and the features of the Vernacular Painting, and then compares east and west vernacular paintings, analyzes the formation and status of Chinese contemporary vernacular painting. The vernacular subject matter is shifted from agricultural age to industrial development, the communication of information shortens the gap between city and countryside, but the vernacular inclinations are increasingly weakened. By now, is there any spiritual garden existing in the vernacular subject consciousness?...
