"Wonderland"is a most powerful of Oates's. In this novel, the author attempted to overcome a nightmarish problem—the problem of self, and she hoped to find a solution to the morbid western culture—"Myth of the Isolated Self". I studied"Wonderland"from the narrative aspect. To emphasize the narrative features of"Wonderland", I displayed the artistic techniques and carnivalesque poetic features.Oates skillfully changed the focalization on the protagonist twice so that she broadened readers'view and prolonged the narrative space. By using agilely narrative discourse modes and non-narrative discourses in"Wonderland", Oates densified the meaning of discourses, and reflected the truth of the work. Oates wonderfully controlled the emotional and cognitive distances to keep the perfect balance between the expressive power released by images and the thinking power of readers. Oates also smartly presented the poetic characteristic of"Wonderland", which broke the dull traditional narrative modes and let the technique and plot to unite neatly. From all these, the artistic features of narration in"Wonderland"are splendidly displayed.
