Using the cohesion theories proposed by Halliday& Hasan, Hu Zhuanglin and many other linguists, the author of this paper analyzes the English abstracts of the English essays. By analyzing the cohesive features appearing in the lexis & grammar, syntactic and the semantics of the English abstracts, the author tries to tell the differences in the usage of cohesion on different language levels and then summaries the stylistic features of English abstracts. On the lexis & grammar level, reference, conjunction and lexical reiteration are the most common ones, whereas substitution and ellipsis are rare. On the syntactic level, the unmarked themes appear most and the patterns of thematic progression are mainly reflected in the pattern of same themes and the pattern of alternation of different themes and rhemes. On the semantic level, the clauses are reflected by the material process and the relational process. All of these show the objective, formal and rigorous features of the English abstracts.
