There exist two opposite opinions on the performance of classical piano pieces. One is that players should abandon their selfness, and just fully represent the composer's original ideas. The other is that the performance is the procedure of re-creation, and players should put their own understanding into it. This paper takes three different versions of performances of "Dawn" from Wilhelm Kempff (1859-1991), Wilhelm Backhause (1884-1969), and Daniel Barenboim (1942- ) as research objects. From technical, style and performance esthetics points of view, this paper analyses these three versions, and points out that both representation and re-creation are relative and necessary. There is no opposability between these two opinions. By making use of the theory of horizon fusion in modern paraphrase, players should look at the existence of piano pieces as the open course of history to the future, try to go beyond music books, playing techniques and their own spirit, which will push players' creativity to a higher level, and at the same time give classical piano pieces new life.
