The Annotation Extended Thematic Exploration

The research into extension of semantic is a special subject comparatively promising and budding in the Chinese tradition linguistics history. Duan Yucai did the research into massively and summarized the related theories. In his representative works Annotation on Shuowen Jiezi, he explained the original meaning and the extended meaning, he also pointed out the relations between them.From the perspective of "metaphor" in modern linguistics, we can get a new interpretation of the relationship between the original meaning and the extended meaning.This article takes the clauses of extended meaning in the Annotation on Shuowen Jiezi as the object of research. The paper divides into three parts.Part one is the brief introduction on Duan Yucai and his Annotation on Shuowen Jiezi. There is also a summary about the predecessors's research.Part two is about the essential information of the extension of sematic in Duan Yucai's Annotation on Shuowen Jiezi, such as the number of entries about the extended meaning, the form of explaining, the sort of terms and the law of extension.Part three is the observation about the extended meaning in the Annotation on Shuowen Jiezi from the perspective of "metaphor",and the trying to make new exploration.
