San-guo Zhi, written by Chen Shou in the West Jin Dynasty, is a national history of Wei, Shu and Wu presented in a series of biographies, among which Fangji Zhuan is a special kind, recording the stories of Fangshi and Shushi by classified biography. This particular biography, which acts as a connecting link between Shi Ji and Hou Han Shu, fails to gain enough academic attention by its historical value. This paper tries to demonstrate that Fang-ji Zhuan in San-guo Zhi is the first classified biography about Fangshi and Shushi by investigating the words Fangji and Shushu.Comprehensive reasons lead to the appearance of Fang-ji Zhuan in San-guo Zhi, especially social mode, employment policy, the development in culture of official historian, Chen Shou's personal interests, and so on. Therefore, these points will be emphasized in the discussion of Fang-ji Zhuan.Fang-ji Zhuan in San-guo Zhi is a crucial part in the history of biography as a connecting link. And its narrative style is unique, which continued the high tide of historiographic-biography Literature. Moreover, it also lead to the research on gradation from refined poetry to popular poetry in the Six Dynasties from a special angle.Fang-ji Zhuan in San-guo Zhi provides valuable information about the evolvement of historiographies and historical biographies in the Wei and Jin Dynasty, and important materials for literary research. This paper aims at revealing its significance in both respects.
