The thesis focuses on the model of the male image in Zhang Ailing's works, trying to get the critical conscious and then makes a further analysis in her experience and psychology of writing. The purpose of the thesis is to find the critical conscious of the man. The thesis can be divided into four parts. The first part is the image of the male in Zhang Ailing's works. Most of the characters in her works are urban. They can be divided into the following type: the playboys who once received western education; the intellectuals who had double personalities of"good guys"and the real men; the survivals of bygone ages from the decline family of feudal. The majority of them not only look ugly, but lack of noble personalities, strong wills, lofty ideals, extensive minds as well. What's more, they are selfish, greedy, hypocritical, cowardly, incompetent, vulgar, ruthless and in deep male dominance ideals. The main description is on the defects male ugliness's of the male image, which shows the writer's negative attitude to the traditional culture and to the mind of the male dominance and her critical conscious. The second part is the ways to mold the male images. The writer described the male images in three ways: uneven contrast, indirect inner monologue and the method of irony. The first method is used to describe the common citizens who are committed with some small faults and the common things in life. It shows the various defects of the male, the writer's negative attitude and criticism to the male. It also reveals the writer's helpless, disappointment and compassion to the male, which creates a sense of dismal. By the second method, the writer describe the characters'inner world, which reveals the ugliness of the male and also shorten the distance among the reader, the writer, and the characters. Of course, it is easy for the readers to comprehensive the content and accept the writer's view, which makes the work more realistic. By the last method, all the defects existed in the male images are revealed, showing the writer's sanitization and negative to the man. All in all, these methods are used to show Zhang Ailing's strong critical to the man, and makes the works subtle, dedicate, true and desolate in a unique humorous beauty. The third part is the critical conscious to the man and its cause. In the writer's opinion, woman is more perfect than man. It's the bind and suppression from the man that contributes to the woman's small bad characteristics. Because the writer is guided by the critical conscious to the man, there is no perfect man but perfect woman in her works. No matter which types of male image, most of them are selfish, greedy, hypocritical, cowardly, incompetent, vulgar, ruthless and deep in male dominance ideas. And there is much serious deficiency in their nature. The cause of the writer's critical conscious is related to her family and life experience, lacking parental care (especially the love from her father). Her father and brother, who were closest to her, were selfish, hypocritical, vulgar, cowardly, ridiculous, absurd, narrow-minded, lacking of responsibility. Therefore, they were looked down upon by the writer and she was deeply influenced by her mother and aunt who had received western education and had strong female conscious. All these factors influenced her understanding to the man's world. The last part is the conclusion. Whether it was in Zhang Ailing's time or the present, it is the man who dominated the society. It is by the model of the male image that the writer criticized the society. With the development of the time, the dominance by the man is disappearing, so is the idea of adoration. The purpose of this thesis is to reveal that both man and woman should look for the fundamental ways to keep harmonious with each other. This kind of critical conscious to the man has important and partial significance both in the past and in the more polite present.
