This thesis compares the differences between dominant Chinese and Western, especially Chinese and American, world outlooks, value systems and modes of thinking, and analyzes how these differences affect the behavioral patterns of people with different cultural background and bring about obstacles to cross-cultural communication; it also proposes some suggestions to overcome the obstacles. As globalization is quickening its pace, cross-cultural communication has become part of our daily life. Cultural shock and misunderstanding between people with different cultural background frequently happen. World outlook and value system, as the core of culture, profoundly affect people's pattern of behavior. A deeper understanding and consciousness of the differences may promote a more effective communication between different cultural background. This thesis compares the differences between Chinese and Western cultures from three perspectives: the ideas of the relationship between man and nature, i.e. the oneness of Heaven and Man vs. the conflict between them; collectivism vs. individualism; and their different modes of thinking. All these differences are reflected in their different speech acts and different non-speech acts, which give rise to misunderstanding and difficulty in cross-cultural communication. Nevertheless, while differences do exist in the two cultures, neither of them is superior or inferior to the other; on the contrary, in most cases, they may be complementary to each other.
