The period of the Italian Renaissance is one of the most important periods in the western history. Because of the artistic magnificence, this period is focused by the world. The prosperity of art was benefit from the intensive patronage in the Italian Renaissance. In the Middle Age, the art patronage was mostly from the Catholic church. Correspondingly, the art patronage was a sort of collective behavior in the Italian Renaissance. From the upper class to the lower one, the Renaissance people were indulged in the art patronage. The art patronage was unique in the Italian Renaissance, which took its shape in the social evolution. Therefore, the deep exploration of the art patronage will be conducive to the understanding of the Renaissance social.The thesis is composed of three chapters. The first chapter aims at the differentiations of the art patrons and the patronage modes, with illustrations of the patronage behaviors in the Italian Renaissance. We will gain a deep impression of the prosperity of the art patronage throughout the description of the art patronage.The second chapter is the observation of the three aspects of the art patronage: motivation, foundation and effect. With the elimination of the boundary between various patrons, the art patronage will be replaced to the social context to discuss the following social interpretations: religious emotion and the acquirement of honor, the transition of the economic concept and its foundation, and Epicureanism and aesthetic taste.The third chapter emphasizes on how the art patronage influenced the Renaissance art. Artists and art in the relationship between the patrons and the artists are the center of the discussion. The influence of the art patronage should be treated dialectically.
