From Description To Explain

Generally speaking, it is believed that language is a kind of communicating tool. That is to say, the view of language as a tool is the most popular linguistic view held in the academic field now. However, under the development of today's language studying and understanding, we are demanded to break the view of language as a tool and to construct linguistic ontology. Viewing generally the academic field, it is found that description is the more popular language study method. Especially under the influence of American Descriptive School, description is more welcome in the language study field. In fact, because it is human beings who make the description, it is impossible to realize the description of language in an completely objective way. To language study, especially to Philosophy of Language which regards revealing human beings and human beings'world outside language as the final purpose, explanation is the most important and most effective method. This article mainly analyses the hermeneutics methodology of Schleiermacher, the hermeneutic theory of Dilthey, and the hermeneutic circle of Heideggerian and Gadamer. It tries to break the view of language as a tool and to construct linguistic ontology. In the end, the study shows that the effective method in language study under the guideline of ontology is explanation rather than description.
