The thesis aims at conducting a contrastive study on Grammatical Metaphor (GM) between leaders'speeches, attempting to find out the similarities and differences. These speeches are all addressed by both Chinese and American leaders at universities. The thesis is composed of six sections and researches topics as follows:Part one is a brief introduction to the whole thesis which introduces the contents, purposes and significance of the study, and so on.Chapter one is a literature review concerning a contrastive study on GM, so we have a brief review of the previous studies on contrastive linguistics and GM by Chinese scholars and scholars abroad.Chapter two presents the theoretical framework of GM and provides examples from leaders'speeches for GM respectively. In this chapter, we distinguish between congruent and metaphorical form of GM.Chapter three observes the conclusive contrastive analysis on GM between Chinese and American leaders'speeches at universities.Chapter four explores the applications of GM in translation of American leaders'speeches at universities. The discussion about translation may be incomprehensive, but its results may provide some clues for translators on the translation of such speeches. The last part is in the conclusions of the thesis, which points out the limitations of the research.
