The rapid development has already brought unprecedented changes to our life. The accelerated renewal of information is having an increasing impact on our life at different levels, from economic organization structures, ways of production, to people's mentality, esthetics and artistic tastes. As a carrier of collective ideology as well as the major communication vehicle, written language is experiencing its own change in this information explosion revolution.The present research takes a sociolinguist perspective to probe into the naming of shops in Yangzhou. Based on a systemically categorization and analysis of all the names collected, the researcher aims to explore, firstly, the interactive relationship between language and society, and the relationship between social language, as is shown by the names of shops, and people's geographic identity, artistic and cultural psychology.This thesis is composed of seven chapters. Introduction starts with history and naming principles of shop names. This history can be traced back to pre-Qin philosophers'explain about"Ming", A linguistic perspective is applied in summarizing naming principles of shops. And the existing research results on shop names and the significance of researching shop names in Yangzhou is presented. Major research methods in this study include field surveys, sample surveys , quantitative research, and covert observation.Chapter one is a general overview of the corpus of shop names focusing on the present state of shop names in Yangzhou. On the basis of classification of shop names according to their scope of business, general features of shop names in Yangzhou are drawn, namely, the era of coexistence and succession, and the pattern of variability of co-existence, accuracy and ambiguity coexist. The second chapter aims to present the characteristics of local culture. Unique regional culture of Yangzhou is sorted out in the relevant books. The wording of shop names help to extract the local culture. Some typical words, words that appear frequently as shop names in Yangzhou are summed up. These words can well represent the characteristics of the characters in Yangzhou city, such as: Yang,spring, Pavilion, moon.Chapter three focuses on the phonological features of shop names in Yangzhou. Vowels, syllables, tone are three important aspects of shop names. A statistics analysis is made on constituent types of vowels, number of syllables, syllable cluster, tone change, and thus the chapter concludes by a unique features of shop names in Yangzhou.In chapter four the researcher divides the shop names into four groups: location, generic name, trade name,,and analyze their social functions respectively. Detailed analysis is made on the basis of statistic of loss of name components. Social environment, local culture and the owner's aesthetic preference as well as "information principle" will cause missing components in names. cultural connotations of each components are drawn through frequency counting of generic name, trade name .Chapter five, taking a historical view, collects and exams all the shop names, existing and that have been existed, in Yangzhou. The establishment of People's Republic of China and the opening up are two historical events in China. These two event are two demarcation lines in Chinese history. shop names Yangzhou at different period of time is shown by the different characteristics ,reflecting changes in the characteristics of the times, and development of Yangzhou City .Chapter six ,focuses on the wording of the name for the different consumer groups, in terms of age (infancy, childhood, youth, in old age), gender (male and female), social class (mental, both mental. Chapter seven exams the standardization of the shop name wording by analysizing existing shop names in Yangzhou. standards and principles of social character are firstly established and non-standard elements in names are found. Finally, the whole process of standardization of shop names in Yangzhou name reflected. Hopefully it will contribute to boost modern civilization.
