As a legendary poet, Han Shan is regarded as one of the three most famous vernacular poets in Tang dynasty together with Wang Fanzhi and Wang Ji. He was once neglected, but is highly respected by the scholars at home and abroad in the 20th century, with Han Shan studies springing up like mushrooms. There were 600 Han Shan poems counted by Han Shan himself and now remain about 300 poems. Han Shan poetry can be divided into two categories according to its content, namely secularized poems and religionary poems. Admonition and argument are the main techniques of expression in Han Shan poetry which, besides a small number of solemn and delicate language, mainly uses colloquial language, thus making it humorous and interesting. Han Shan poetry, quite similar to colloquial language, can be rated as model of Tang vernacular poetry and has a high status in the history of vernacular literature. Its actual reflection of the language features then makes it a very precious material not only for understanding the phonetics, vocabulary and grammar of colloquial language in Tang dynasty, but also for studying middle ancient and modern Chinese as well as the developing history of Chinese language. Therefore, targeting at the modifying compound words in Han Shan poetry, this thesis starts from the angle of semantic construction and attempts to reveal the inner semantic relationship and combination form of modifying compound words in Han Shan poetry by classification, and thereby generalizes the regularity. The article is composed of five parts: The first part is Introduction, mainly introducing the research target, object, task, significance, current research, selected version and the selection of language material, while the second part introduces the relevant theories and methods adopted in the article. The third part is the principal part of the article, which analyses the predication and semantic structure classification of exhaustively selected modifying compound words in Han Shan poetry, detailedly describes the inner semantic relationship between two morphemes in modifying compound words, trying to generalize a combination mode for each semantic relationship and find the complex semantic relations within the modifying compound words. The fourth part concludes the semantic construction features of the modifying compound words in Han Shan poetry. Based on the second part, this part will get conclusions by data statistics with chart in order to discuss the semantic construction of the selected modifying compound words. The fifth part is Conclusion, summarizing the main views in the article and at the same time pointing out the limitations. The research in this article can give the readers a general understanding of the semantic construction of the modifying compound words in Han Shan poetry.
