John Donne, who has been seen as the founder of the metaphysical school,is a very representative English poet with colorful individuality in the later Renaissance. His poetry has a very unique style, in which there are always a great number of bizarre and appropriate imageries to express feelings. Donne's poetry, which is difficult for people to understand at the first sight, actually is full of wisdom. What's more, his poetry reflects the connotation and characteristic of Renaissance humanist culture, where we can expose to both the unique spiritual cultural style of late Renaissance in England and the strong power of his individual manner. Nevertheless, for a very long of period, the metaphysical style of his poetry has been criticized by many professionals, who consider it as a show-off of intellect. It was modernism that uncovered the connection between Donne's poetry and the conventional ideological culture of western after the deepening of the research in literary history, cultural history and thought history. In the opinion of modernism, the unique metaphysical way of Donne's poetry enhanced the meaning of poetry, which can be seen as an advanced idea in Renaissance. Eventually, here comes a new age of comments to Donne's poetry, for more and more reader began to review Donne from different aspects.This article mainly focuses on the ideological and cultural meaning of Donne's poetry, trying to reveal the connection between his poetry and humanistic culture, which is also the original point of this thesis.The first chapter introduces Donne's poetry and the background of his life, verbalizes 3 important stages of his life, and describes the process how his thought changed. Then the article concludes 3 humanism features of Donne, namely: the combination of classical and reality, the pursuit of freedom as an individual spiritual and metaphysical style of writing. These features separately constitute the chapter 2, 3 and 4 of the thesis. The second chapter puts emphasis on the social influence of humanism in England, and the relationship between the social influence and the creation idea of Donne. The third chapter makes accentuation on how the humanistic individuality goes into the creation of the poetry. The fourth chapter makes elaboration at first on the origin of"metaphysical poet", and then tries to reveal the creative thought of his poetry. The fifth chapter analyzed the influence of the Donne's poetry. It can be divided into the influence of the later English poetry, and the influence of the western intellectual world.
