Someone is called"genius"legendarily. Actually, they make great efforts. Those geniuses have the gift of being poets and critics. Edgar Allen Poe is such a kind of person. People call him a"peculiar person with ability like a wizard". Since he is a poet as well, the word"poet"often been wrote like"POEt"by someone to emphasize the relationship between his name and his identity. This study is on Edgar Allen Poe, and is mainly discussing about his literary thoughts, including topics on aesthetics and poetics. These theories are based on comprehensive reading and study on his poems, critiques, essays and some of the stories, and even fragmentary of his unfinished drama.From the study on his life and works, I concluded his aesthetics and poetics thoughts on literature as follows:The aesthetics of Poe is concluded from mainly four aspects, such as the length, imagination, topic, rhyme and rhythm of poems. These four traits of poems indicate his aesthetics on unity, feeling, rationaliy and melody.The poetics of Poe is divided by me into three parts. They are intention, musical sound and charm of poems. These three parts are actually mixed together. Whenever we read a poem, they often treated as a whole. But in order to do this specific research, we took them apart by theory.At present, there are so many differences between western research and research at home. And there are so many difficulties on Edgar Allen Poe's research. Language is one of the reasons. More reasons, I think, are on our notions and ideas. We just accept the old-fashioned attitude and take him as a fictionist or story-teller, but didn't think much of him and didn't pay enough attention on his poems. Thus, I wrote this thesis on Edgar Allen Poe's aesthetics and poetics and I hope more and more people will come to this field to know him as a poet and a critic as well.
