Vague language has begun since the 1970's. Scholars in China have done plenty of studies on this from the multiple perspectives. Vague language has found wide applications in terms of communicative strategies in order to achieve speakers' communicative goals. We will adopt different vague language strategies according to different goals and goal relations. Therefore it is necessary for the goal-analysis of discourse in communication. With the principle of goal direction formulated by professor Liao Meizhen as the theoretical framework, and focusing on the two aspects of the principle goal relation and goal interaction, the thesis aims at expounding vague language in communication, by examining the examples mainly in daily communication. The thesis analyzes how the participants' goals in communication are pursued and accomplished by vague language strategies and how the pragmatic functions are achieved.
