In the recent decade, Asia Fever is heating up in contemporary art worldwide. Asian discourses from Asia also become the focus in the field of cultural studies. Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial is the first and only international art exhibition which represents Asian art from a local perspective. Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, the organizer of the triennial, has a collection of Asian contemporary art which is the most comprehensive and completed in the whole world. Therefore, to discuss the Asian discourses from Asia, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and the Asian Art Triennial are undoubtedly the most representative materials. The author of this thesis visited Fukuoka Art Museum for on-site research during the opening of the fourth Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial last year, and gathered a large number of first-hand materials through interviewing staffs, collecting documentary archives and visual samples. Unlike the previous report-style articles and research papers which focused on administrative structure and operating strategy, this thesis attempts to discuss the curatorial thinking of Fukuoka Art Museum and Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial. By the means of history of ideas, it tries to analyze the unique Asian discourse in Fukuoka, combined with their ideological basis, historical context, the discourse contents and the way of its presentation. The thesis includes three parts:the first part introduces the long process from Asian Art Show hosted by Fukuoka City Art Museum to the Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial held by Fukuoka Asian Art Museum; secondly, it demonstrates the fundamental principle of the museum which was inherited from Asian Art Show, points out the changes in curatorial thoughts of the triennial in ten years. In the third part, the author discusses the Asian discourse of Fukuoka in detail, searches the theorical basis in early Asian discourses before World War II, and describes the context in the post-colonial and post-Cold War theories after World War II. While sorting out its ideological sources, the thesis analyzes the inevitable consequences on the curatorial thoughts. At last, it summarizes the limitations of Asian discourse in Fukuoka, which inevitably leads Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial to the dilemma nowadays.
