This is a study on Chinese traditional opera writer Xieqing Huang and his works. Huang is of transitional significance to playwriting in the mid and late leaf of Qing Dynasty. His reputation in the province of Jiangsu and Zhejiang mainly credits to his poems and lyrics. Huang worked with nine sorts of Chinese opera all through his lifetime, seven of which are collected in the Seven Sorts of Lyric Song in Yiqing Pavilion. Focusing on both the writer and his works, this paper exerts an accurate research on Huang's biography, as well as an analysis on his masterpieces from the detail to the whole range. A conclusion on his significance in opera writing of Qing Dynasty is offered on the above basis.There are five chapters in this paper. Chapter I offers an account on Huang's life through material full and particular which distinguish this paper from others. An innovation comes from the new definition on the year of his birth and death. Chapter II analyses Huang's poems and interpretation of his criticism on poetry, with an important contribution through the introduction of Drafts of Daizheng in Zhuoyi Garden, his unreleased draft newly discovered. A profound discussion is elaborated on his most well-known operas Princess Cheung Ping and Snow in Peach Vale respectively in Chapter III and IV, serving as the basis for the overall research of his playwriting in the following chapters. An innovated interpretation to Princess Cheung Ping on its title and backbone highlights Chapter III. Chapter V concludes the main traits of his collection of Yiqing Pavilion from four dimensions after a brief account on his another seven plays.The epilogue gives a favorable comment on Xieqing Huang's life and operas with an confirmation on his distinct function in Chinese traditional opera of Qing Dynasty. Attached in the end is a brief chronology of Xieqing Huang's major events based on the Chronology of Xieqing Huang by Eting Lu. A book list of Xieqing Huang published from the late leaf of Qing Dynasty to today is also provided for the future research.
