John Crowe Ransom was the 20th century American critic, poet, the leader of Anglo-American "New Criticism". Under his leadership, New Criticism became one of the most important criticism schools of the 20th century and dominated the American university classroom in the 40th and 50th. Although New Criticism, in the late fifties, have declined, Text Analysis Theory proposed by Ransom had a far-reaching influence on later literary criticism, especially on poetic criticism. There has been some domestic research achievements on Ransom's ontology but they are somewhat systematically deficient. This paper, on the basis of previous research achievements, tries to analyze systematically Ransom's ontology, and discusses such areas as the internal and external factors of literary ontology formation, its basic connotation and methodology, the relationship between literary ontology and the structure/texture theory, the theoretical and reference values of literary ontology.Observation and evaluation on Ransom's literary ontology must begin with its theoretical resources and realistic basis. The rapid development of Anglo-American literary theory in the 20th century matured Ransom's theory accomplishment. As the backbone leaders of the Southern"agricultural school", he led the Renaissance Movement, which shifted him from poetic practice to theory study. And the early practice of poetry accumulated a solid literary experience for his later criticisim theory. This composes the first chapter of this paper. The second chapter focuses on the basic content of Ransom's literary ontology. With comparative study on Western traditional ontology and Ransom's ontology, this chapter clarifies the basic connotation of the latter and, on the basis of studying other critical theory, teases out it's criticism methodology. The third chapter is the specific analysis of Ransom's unique proposal of structure/texture theory. This section focuses mainly on the relationship between literary ontology and the structure/texture theory, the basic content of sturcture and texture, distinction between structure/ texture and content/form, distinction between structure/texture and organic unity theory so as to discuss the reasonable and inadequate aspects of structure/texture theory. On the basis of summarizing the main points of the paper, the conclusion chapter analyzes the theoreical value of Ransom's literary ontology and its reference significance to the development of Chinese literary theory.
